The Memory Foam Mattress category has the highest satisfaction rate over any other type of mattress on the market today. Every type and brand of mattress, will have a certain percentage of people who do not like them, but the memory foam category has the highest overall satisfaction rating. Known for better durability, contouring, pain & pressure relief,-memory foam (also frequently referred to as “Visco-Elastic Memory Foam”) is the fastest growing category in the bedding industry.
The three top brands in the industry are Tempur-Pedic, Comfor-Pedic by Beautyrest, and IComfort by Serta. All memory foam used in bedding is designed to contour to the body and to provide pressure relief, however, there are significantly better benefits offered by the most premium formulas on the market. Some people find memory foam to trap body heat and therefore cause them to sleep uncomfortably hot. The cell structures, airflow, and cooling gel technologies of the three top brands properly address that concern and do not trap heat nearly like the more inconsistent blends of generic cheaper commodity memory foam brands in the marketplace. With the best satisfaction guarantees in the business, there are a very small percentage of returns or complaints for these premium brands.
Memory foam was developed by NASA in 1966 to provide pressure relief in the seating for the astronauts. The foam was developed to be slow to spring back due to its open-cell solid structure that is temperature sensitive and matches pressure against it. Designed to return to it’s natural shape, this material cradles uniquely to the curves and pressure points of the body offering excellent relief against pain and pressure.
One of the main contributing scientists that developed memory foam with NASA was Charles A.Yost, who later founded Dynamic Systems, Inc. with NASA to commercialize the foam. First used in X-ray table pads, medical equipment, and sports equipment like football helmet liners..In the medical field, memory foam was and is used to reduce pressure sores and gangrene caused when patients are immobile in bed for long periods of time.
In the early 1980’s NASA released memory foam to the public. Due to difficult manufacturing processes Fagerdala World Foams was one of the few companies willing to work with the foam. Fagerdala merged with Denmark foam company Dan-Foam. Their Scientists spent 10 years and millions in scientific research perfecting the cellular make up of the material so that it would respond to be the ideal sleeping surface.
In 1992 Bob Trussell of Lexington, KY visited Dan-Foam and started the company Tempur-Pedic to bring this miracle foam back to the states. Tempur-Pedic built engineering, research and development centers in Duffield, Virginia and a second fabrication plant in Albuquerque, NM.
Tempur-Pedic quickly became famous for the “wine glass” commercial, and now is reviewed by Consumer Reports as tops in surveys for “Would I buy this mattress again”, and overall “satisfaction” and for “problem sleepers”. Many other manufacturers have followed in Tempur-Pedic’s success, but few truly rival the quality and overall satisfaction. Brands will differ based on their degree of open cell structures, densities, and combinations of feels. Tempur-Pedic’s exact formula for Tempur Material remains proprietary. The cells of this material respond more to the pressure points of the body based on weight and temperature than any other material.
Memory Foam at 81% is the highest rated category forcustomer satisfaction over air, innerspring, latex, water, futon and more.
…Review of Tempur-Pedic “..Seems they use a temperature sensitive, breathable material that uses weight to distribute pressure over the entire surface of the bed. If you are looking for more comfortable and longer sleeping, give this leading mattress manufacturer a try.”

10% of all mattress owners (regardless of the brand they own) are dissatisfied because they sleep hot. 2010 Gallup Study of the Consumer Mattress Market Only 4% of Tempur-Pedic Mattress owners report the same complaint
“The Best Mttress For A Better Night’s Sleep” Memory Foam has a slight advantage over innerspring mattresses for back problems and improved sleep. Really helpful for motion separation and undisturbed sleep.
6/15/12 Satisfaction Ratings: Comfor-Pedic By Beautyrest 94% “We sleep so much better in our Comforpedic”, Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme 90% “Tempur-Pedic saved my back.
Pros include: Conforms to body shape, Isolates Motion Between Partners, Can offer relief for joint pain, more durable than innerspring mattresses. Cons include: More expensive than innerspring mattresses, doesn’t breathe, retain heat (this applies to the category as a whole, Comforpedic, IComfort, and Tempur-Pedic have addressed this their designs), impedes movement, feels hard in cold weather, new mattresses release odor. (Top Solution to these Cons http://www.beautyrest.com/beds/comforpedic. Comforpedic from Beautyrest features Aircool Memory Foam that dissipates heat, is easy tor oll over on, and does not respond to the room temperature)
On a three month clinical trial, over 90% of people trying a particular brand of viscoelastic mattress experienced marked improvements in the quality of their sleep. Other studies claimed 83% reduction in tossing and turning, and deeper sleep experienced by participants. Some heavier people found it hard to roll over on, but certain models in the industry provide an easier to roll over on surface.
You should select your mattress based on your needs and not price. Memory foam mattresses benefit sleepers with pressure relief and motion separation. Try it out at great length in a retail store to know if it’s right for you.
A higher density memory foam mattress is better quality than lesser densities but to a degree. Each density has different properties and you should choose carefully based on your individual needs. The higher the density, the firmer the memory foam gets. No warranty coverage is a red flag for a memory foam mattress.

“Definitely a top pick for me! 5 Stars”
“The Best Mattress for a Better Night’s Sleep” An adjustable bed can be a good buy if you need to sleep with your head raised. Doctors sometimes recommend elevating the head to help people with COPDbreathe easier, or to prevent nighttime heartburn from GERD. These beds can also allow you to adjust your knees and hips to a 90-degree angle, relieving some of the pressure on sore joints.
